A Southampton support group of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) has managed to purchase invaluable equipment for the Southampton General Hospital.
The Support Group has received numerous donations including a contribution of £1450 from Esso at Fawley.
The funds were raised by the refinery workers from the 2008 Christmas Dinner Dances.
Process Leader, at the refinery, Chris Coleman nominated the local Support Group of the JDRF to receive the donation.
Chris’s daughter Katherine was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic in April 2008, when she was just five years old. She needs four injections of insulin every day just to stay alive.
Funding was also given by Orchard Junior and Infant School, Dibden Purlieu Rainbows and Brownies, the T & G Union and Falegia Lodge, Totton.
With the money raised the support group has managed to purchase carbohydrate counting scales and insulin cool packs to be distributed to diabetic children in the Southampton Paediatric Medical Unit, as well as giving funding to a Southampton University Research project.
The Support Group was set up in 2003 by Gary Appleton, with the assistance of parents, like Chris, of type 1 diabetic children.
It was the result of an initiative of the Southampton General Hospital, Child Paediatric Medical Unit.
Chris’ wife, Nikki Coleman says, “Our aim is to improve the lives of children with diabetes, to be the best source of information on diabetes, to help children help themselves and help families come to terms and deal with the condition.”
Through fund raising and charity support, over the years the support group has been able to fund projects at Southampton General Hospital as well as support research into finding a cure working with Diabetes UK and the JDRF.
Esso also donated £1450 to The Waterside Gateway Club from the remaining funds raised at the Christmas Dinner Dances.
