Local year 10 school pupils, aged 14 and 15, took part in the 12th annual “Esso Maths Challenge” at Totton College at the end of June.
The incredibly close competition lasted just over an hour, which comprised of problem solving questions challenging the teams of students.
Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley Refinery are the annual sponsors of this event and donated £1000 to Totton College.
Out of the eight schools which took part, Applemore Technology College, Dibden Purlieu, were triumphant, just one point ahead of last year’s winner, Mountbatten School, Romsey.
The winning school was awarded a shield and a cheque for £500 presented by Hannah Howard, a design engineer from the Refinery, which will go towards the supporting and learning of mathematics.
The runner’s up were awarded a cheque of £200.
Michael Wragg, competition organiser and Maths teacher at Totton College said, “I was delighted with the record number of teams that took part in the competition this year and the very high standard.
Applemore Technology College are spending the prize money on Autograph, a maths computer package that will enable learners to explore mathematical ideas and test their understanding.”
Totton College graphic art students were also involved designing a poster advertising the event.
Elisabeth Kuscan, A2 design student, impressed the judges with her poster and won an iPod.
Francesca Toma of Fawley Refinery Community Affairs said, “This is a fun and creative opportunity for all pupils to enjoy mathematics.
This subject is very important, leading to successful careers such as engineers – possibly even at Fawley Refinery!”
Next year’s “Esso Maths Challenge” will be held on Wednesday 23 June, 2010.
