Preparing for planting: Children at Cadland Primary School with teacher Cathy Haines. Photography: Ian Jackson A new learning garden is set to provide pupils with a fun approach to food, as well as practical experience relating to the science curriculum.

Children at Cadland Primary School in Holbury are busy preparing a new garden for planting, with equipment and seeds bought with a series of grants from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley.

The donation has funded seeds, spades, forks and other gardening equipment.

The grants were made to the school as part of a special scheme designed to help local schools, and also improve the links between ExxonMobil and the local community.

Head teacher David Mewes said: “The completed project will mean that our children will be involved in gardening activities for the whole year. We will be growing vegetables and flowers.

As well as integrating gardening activities into the curriculum, our children will be selling some of their produce during our May Fayre. We will also be using some of the vegetables in our cookery lessons.”

The ExxonMobil Link School Programme provides science equipment grants; assistance in improving the school environment and curriculum resources to almost 40 schools based around its main areas of employment.
