Photograph by Ian Jackson Paper boys and girls at Waterside newsagents will be more visible, whilst doing their paper rounds this winter, thanks to a donation of high visibility vests from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley Refinery.

The vests have so far been donated to Blackfield Post Office, ML News, Holbury and Dibden Purlieu News and the Fawley Express Store.

A Metal Trades worker at Fawley Refinery started this initiative after not being able to see a paper delivery boy in the dark whilst on his way to work one morning.

Appreciating the risk of this issue it was raised in one of the regular Safety Team Meetings held at the Refinery and it was decided some action should be taken.

With donations from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical and major contractors at Fawley Refinery, including companies such as SEC, DSL, PTF, Intertek, Aggreko, SGS and TDG, a large number of high visibility vests were gathered and donated to newsagents in the area.

Daren Early, a Control Technician at the Refinery helped to gather and distribute the vests. He said, “The safety of local paper delivery boys and girls is hugely important.

At the refinery safety is always our first priority and we are so pleased when this can be extended to our local community.”
