Fawley Refinery - New safety equipment for martial arts club

A martial arts club which helps develop confidence, self defence skills and general fitness is updating its safety equipment thanks to a grant in recognition of the time and effort one volunteer has put into the club.

 

Tenki Ryu Ju Jitsu club, based at the River Park Leisure Centre in Winchester, has received a £1000 grant from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley.

 

The money will be put towards new safety mats, gloves and pads as well as safety training for instructors.

 

It has been donated under a special scheme designed to recognise the efforts of ExxonMobil employees and their families who contribute their time, talent and energy to schools, charities and non-profit making organisations.

 

The scheme not only helps local organisations, but also improves the links between ExxonMobil and the local community.

 

The grant applicant was Lee Naylor, an assistant instructor at the club, who works at ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley.

 

He has been involved with martial arts for 22 years and his wife and children are also involved with the club in Winchester.

 

Lee said: “The most important thing about Ju Jitsu is that it helps build confidence, particularly in children.”

 

The club, which meets on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, is open to children aged seven years and over as well as adults.

 

The ExxonMobil Volunteer Involvement Programme at Fawley, together with its sister scheme for school governors, has so far contributed more than £400,000 to local community projects, since it was started six years ago.
