Fawley Refinery - Swimming instructors receive training

Parents and children enjoy the water at Lymington Swimming Club with John Gannaway (left).Volunteer swimming instructors and poolside helpers at Lymington Swimming Club have received training, thanks to the long term commitment of one of their volunteers.

The club, which is run by volunteers and aims to give as many children as possible the opportunity to learn to swim and to be confident in and around water, has received a £1000 grant from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley in recognition of the time and effort one employee has put into volunteering with the club.

The money has been donated under a special scheme designed to recognise the efforts of ExxonMobil employees and their families who contribute their time, talent and energy to schools, charities and non-profit making organisations.

The scheme not only helps local organisations, but also improves the links between ExxonMobil and the local community.

The grant applicant was John Gannaway, who works for ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley.

He has been an active parent volunteer with the club for over five years and until recently served on the committee.

The club has about 60 children on its books and meets weekly at Lymington Health and Leisure Centre.

John said: “Our club is all about parents teaching children to swim.

It is so important that all children understand water safety, particularly in the area we live, if they grow up to be confident in the water, there are so many opportunities to be enjoyed.”

The grant enabled training of three parents to the Swimming Teachers Association Beginners qualification.

The training involved attending six Saturday afternoon sessions each lasting four hours.

On the final week, the participants took and passed both theory and practical exams.

It was a pre-requisite for the course that candidates hold a pool safety qualification.

This was undertaken and passed by the trainee teachers and a further seven club members.

The ExxonMobil Volunteer Involvement Programme at Fawley, together with its sister scheme for school governors, has so far contributed more than £370,000 to local community projects, since it was started six years ago.
