New equipment entertains babies at children’s centre

The youngest visitors at a Sure Start children’s centre are being kept exceptionally busy, thanks to a donation of £500 from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley.

Babies visiting the Forest First Children’s Centre in Blackfield, which is managed by Totton College in partnership with Hampshire County Council, now have a specially designed wooden play area, complete with a range of activities specifically for children under one year old.

The play area is used by families accessing a range of multi-agency services at the children’s centre, in Heather Road, such as midwifery, health visiting and oral health clinics.

It also provides a focal point for parents and carers to bring their children to play and socialise with other families.

Tracie Currie, manager of the Forest First Children’s Centre, said: “The new equipment helps create a safe environment for babies, enabling them to access stimulating activities, either with their mothers or while their mothers entertain older children.

Sometimes they are here for appointments, other times it is just to come and play during our structured play sessions.

“Our centre was the first Children’s Centre in the New Forest but is now one of 10 offering a wide range of multi-agency services and signposting parents to a range of intervention and preventative services.”

Francesca Toma of Community Affairs at Fawley Refinery said: “The Forest First Children’s Centre is very much at the hub of the Blackfield community.

It provides a wide range of services to a large number of families in the area. As a responsible member of the community ExxonMobil is pleased to contribute, knowing full well how many local children and their families will benefit.”
