Snow and black ice could be a major hazard across central and southern areas on Friday, as weather fronts sweep south across the UK, the Met Office is warning today.
Temperatures through Thursday night are predicted to dip well below zero across a large swathe of the country.
Rain and sleet will then increasingly turn to snow through Friday morning as bands of cloud spill southwards through the day. Black ice will also be a problem on untreated roads and pavements.
Ian Cameron, Head of the Met Office Operations Centre said, "Disruption to travel networks is a concern, especially as the bad weather will coincide with the Friday morning rush hour for some areas.
We're looking at the worst conditions lasting for around 2 to 3 hours as the band of wintry weather spreads south through the day."
Conditions will improve steadily from the north through the day as the snow turns back to rain.
