New Forest Map
The New "New Forest" Map
Ordnance Survey maps of the New Forest area have been updated to include the boundaries of Britain’s newest National Park.

The New Forest in Hampshire, which is famed for its wild ponies, is the smallest National Park in the country, and the first to be designated in England for 50 years.

The ancient landscape is diverse and includes woodland, open heathland, bogs, streams and coastal areas. Much of its landscape is also of importance to nature conservation and provides extensive recreational opportunities for walkers, riders, fishermen and many others.

The revised Ordnance Survey maps clearly indicate the park boundaries with a series of magenta-coloured dashes. This works in conjunction with new areas of access land, which show parts of the countryside, previously out of bounds to walkers, which have been opened up under new access laws. These areas are marked with a light yellow tint surrounded by a narrow, pale orange border.

Product manager at Ordnance Survey Debbie Cable says: “We are delighted to make these maps available to the public. We hope they encourage visitors to explore the New Forest as well as help those who manage the countryside. The unique character of the area is valued by so many people. The revised Ordnance Survey maps illustrate the importance of defining the Park as a nationally recognised site.”

The updated editions include the following OS Explorer Maps at a scale of 1:25 000:

OS Explorer Map OL 22: New Forest OS Explorer Map OL 29: Isle of Wight OS Explorer Map 130: Salisbury & Stonehenge OS Explorer Map 131: Romsey, Andover & Test Valley

The OS Landranger Maps at a scale of 1:50 000 that have been revised are:

OS Landranger Map 195 Bournemouth & Purbeck, Wimborne Minster & Ringwood
OS Landranger Map 196: The Solent & The Isle of Wight, Southampton & Portsmouth

Interim chief executive of the New Forest National Park Authority Susan Carter says: “The New Forest attracts tourists from around the world as well as visitors from the local area. Many of those come on a regular basis to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the recreational opportunities it provides. Now its National Park status has been highlighted on Ordnance Survey maps, people will be able to make the most of their visits and be alerted to the very special qualities of the area.”

The revised maps are available through retailers and Ordnance Survey’s online map shop at www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/leisure
