Para Red contamination of ground cayenne pepper supplied to Perfecta Limited

Further to FAFI 26/2005 issued on 5 May 2005, regarding a large-scale product recall being undertaken with regard to products incorporating the above contaminated ground cayenne pepper, that a further 12 products have been added to the affected product list which can be viewed at the link below.

Para Red is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations1995 and is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. Para Red is chemically very similar to Sudan I.

The Agency’s independent scientific experts have advised that, although there is very limited data available it would be prudent to assume that it could be a genotoxic carcinogen.

Due to the large variety and number of products known to be affected at present the Food Standards Agency will not be issuing individual Food Alerts for each product, but instead will be publishing a list of the affected products on the website. It is possible that further products will added to this list in due course.
