The HSBC Bank is warning customers about the latest wave of e-mails, that have been sent out over the Internet, in the last few days looking as if they have come from the bank.

These E-mails are requesting customer’s to logon to the HSBC Bank web site using the link provided, and when there, customers are asked for their personal details such as Bank Account Number, Mother's Maiden Name, Security Password and even the bank's Sort Code.

Customers of financial institutions are reminded not to give any information out over the Internet via e-mails or official looking web sites.

They would also like to remind customers that they do not contact anyone via e-mail or even by phone to ask for their personal information.

If you believe that you’ve been contacted in this way, and you have given out your personal bank details, please contact your bank or building society immediately, you will find the telephone number on the top of your bank statements, on the back of your bank credit or debit card or in the phone book.

Remember to treat all unsolicited e-mails and telephone calls with caution.

Never give out your personal details over the telephone, not even if they sound like a genuine financial organisation.

Never click on any links from within e-mails to visit known or unknown financial web sites.

Install anti-virus software on to your computer and make sure it's kept bang up-to-date and run it regularly, make sure you also get regular anti-virus updates from your anti-virus software provider.

Install and learn how to use a personal firewall, if you are running Windows XP home or professional editions you are already running a firewall between your computer and the outside world.

Install the latest security updates from the Microsoft Windows website, these are sometimes known as patches.

Finally, always remember to keep your personal information "Personal" at all times.
