Internet security firms issued a high level alert to computer users today to watch their inbox for a new virus, "Worms_Sober.S" which offer “FREE” 2006 World Cup tickets.
The E-mail has an attachment disguised as a ticketing confirmation message which when opened sends the same message on to all the people listed in your address book, it also put a virus on to your hard drive.
The e-mails originally come from the following addresses Ticketúfifa.de and Gewinnúfifa.de but look like they may have come from a friend or work colleague.
All the major Anti Virus software companies have already included the virus details in today’s updates, which you should download from your Vender's website. If your antivirus software allows you toupdate automatically, then this new threat should be dealt with - but it is always best to check the last date and time of your automatic updates!
The email worm is part of a bigger virus, also known as Sober.P, which has spread through more than 30 countries since yesterday (Tuesday 3rd May 2005), affecting mainly the United States , Europe and South America .
The worm will install a back door so the virus writer can gain access to the infected computer.
No one knows yet what the motive of this virus is it could be to attack websites on a global scale or to send spam e-mail around the world.
The first phase of the World Cup ticket sales was over-subscribed by 10 times and those fans who were successful in the lottery have already been informed.
