With the clocks going back at the end of the month,
Hampshire County Council's road safety team is urging everyone
to `be safe and be seen'.
Pedestrians, cyclists and children run a greater risk of being involved in road
accidents during the winter months, when it gets dark as early as 4pm.
Wearing reflective clothing and armbands makes people much more visible when
the light fades, helping them to stay safe.
The road safety team is joining forces with Asda stores throughout Hampshire
next week (week commencing 24 October), with a host of activities for children
and the chance to win prizes such as reflective and fluorescent tabards, bags,
stickers and other accessories.
Asda has also cooked up a nationwide initiative to support the Department for
Transport's Be Safe, Be Seen campaign, in the shape of Hedgehog Bread and a `baker
hedgehog' soft toy.
The hedgehog is the figurehead of the national campaign.
The County Council has a number of common sense tips for everyone to be aware
of during the darker evenings and mornings:

• Bright or fluorescent clothes show up
best during daylight hours, even in dull or misty weather |

• Reflective material is best in the dark as it shows
up in car headlights, and strips of reflective material on
coats and school bags are very effective |

• It is illegal to cycle at night without a white front
light, a red rear light and red rear reflector - and remember
to always wear a cycle helmet |

• Cross the road at the safest place possible, and always
at a pedestrian crossing if one is nearby. Remember to use
the Green Cross Code at all times |

• Choose routes that are well lit. If there is no pavement

Two County Council road safety officers will be at the Asda store in Totton on
24 October between 2pm-4pm.
The County Council's Executive Member for Environment (South), Councillor Tim
Knight, said: "It's so easy to make sure you're visible in the dark, and
it could save your life. Taking a few simple precautions will mean you're much
more visible to drivers as winter draws in. You can see them, but can drivers
see you?"
Executive Member for Environment (North), Cllr Jonathan Glen, said: "We're
grateful for Asda's support on this campaign, and I'm sure our road safety officers
will do an excellent job in helping our young road users stay safe in the dark." |
