| One of the many Scarecrows from last year's Festival |
|
Exbury Gardens in the New Forest is hoping that hundreds of scarecrows will visit them in August.
Ever since the filming of Worzel Gummidge, the most famous scarecrow of them all, was based at Exbury, the world-famous Gardens have felt a great affinity with the endearing effigies.
Now, as Exbury’s third annual scarecrow festival is planned, the organisers have called for all local charities, associations and groups who would like to make and exhibit Worzel Gummidges of their own, to get in touch with them.
“We love scarecrows here at Exbury,” said Nicholas de Rothschild, whose family owns the award-winning Gardens on the banks of the Beaulieu River in the New Forest.
“We don’t believe they scare away crows – in fact they make jolly good perches for the birds – but they do add a certain little something to the garden scene.
“Anyone who would like to make a scarecrow for the third annual festival would be more than welcome here over the late August bank holiday weekend. They can simply show off their scarecrow, or they can set up a stand and promote their organisation or charity – entirely free of charge. We will be glad to see them,” he said.
Any organisations, schools, charities or groups who would like to show off scarecrows and promote themselves at the same time, should get in touch with Nigel Philpott at Exbury Gardens on 023 8089 1203 or email nigel.philpott@exbury.co.uk
Entry in the festival is entirely free and the organisers are hoping to top last year’s total of nearly 80 scarecrows dotted about the Gardens.
