Clamping down on untaxed cars New Forest District Council is urging residents to make sure their cars are taxed, as the DVLA are cracking down and clamping untaxed cars.

It is the council’s responsibility to report cars that are not taxed, and not abandoned (i.e. parked on a highway), to the DVLA. Council officers will be looking out for untaxed cars, but the public can also help by reporting such cars directly to the DVLA by using the following freephone number:

0800 035 5202.

The DVLA has commissioned NCP (National Car Parks) to track-down and deal with cars they find untaxed and parked on a highway, where they will clamp the car.

If the owner contacts NCP within 24 hours the clamp will be removed, but if they don’t, the vehicle is towed away to the compound on Normandy Way, Marchwood. It is only released after the owed tax has been settled, vehicle ownership has been proven, and a £280 release fee has been paid.

The clamp on the vehicle is clearly DVLA branded and a pouch of contact instructions is fixed to the windscreen. NCP do advise the police of any vehicles moved, in case the owner thinks it has been stolen.

Cllr Michael Thierry, NFDC portfolio holder for the environment said: “These tough new measures will remind people that it is unacceptable to own a car and not pay road tax. Although not an NFDC scheme, the council still has a responsibility to report untaxed cars to the DVLA.

“My advice to all residents is to make sure your car tax has been paid, and to avoid any such measures being taken.” However, if a car is no longer wanted, NFDC will collect it for free under the vehicle amnesty scheme.
