The Calshot RNLI All Weather Lifeboat ‘Sarah Emily Harrop’ evacuated an ill crew member from a tanker at anchor in the Solent last night (22 August) and transferred him ashore under medical supervision.

The lifeboat was on a routine training exercise in the central Solent on Wednesday evening when it was tasked at approximately 20.30 by the Coastguard to attend the MV Cumbrian Fisher, a tanker at anchor close by. A crew member was reportedly suffering from severe abdominal pain and required immediate medical attention. The Lifeboat, under the command of recently appointed Coxswain Duncan Cristie, returned briefly to Calshot to pick up Dr. Joe Peoples, the station's deputy Honorary Medical Officer, before proceeding at best speed to the MV Cumbrian Fisher.

After an initial examination onboard the tanker, the casualty, a 31 year old Rumanian sailor suffering from renal colic, was transferred to the lifeboat and taken to Camber Jetty, Portsmouth. The Lifeboat was met by the Coastguard and a Hampshire ambulance which subsequently took the sailor to Queen Alexandra's Hospital. The Lifeboat then returned to Calshot and the crew stood down at 23.15.

Medical evacuations are relatively uncommon incidents for the Calshot RNLI lifeboat however this is the second such call in as many months after an American tourist who had fallen ill had to be taken off the cruise ship 'Sea Princess' in July.
