Eighty teachers in schools across the Waterside will supplement their vital first aid experience thanks to an initiative launched by Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley Refinery.

The training, provided by South Central Ambulance Service, is part of Fawley Refinery’s community investment programme.

The first training day was held at Fawley Refinery on the 20 June with staff from Fawley Infant School and Manor Infant School attending.

Twelve staff in total learnt how to deal with a range of situations which they might encounter at school, including burns, fractures and epileptic fits.

Further training days will occur in order to accommodate all of the ten Fawley Link Schools. (Please see editors note)

A total of £3,000 was invested by Fawley Refinery in this project which aims to provide the local schools with the opportunity to undergo this training

.

Gisela Muns of Fawley Refinery, Community Affairs explained: “At the refinery we believe that nobody should get hurt at work.

Through our work with local schools we know that, like us, teachers take safety incredibly seriously and thus we felt that supporting first aid training in schools would be an extremely worthy investment in the local community.”

Sue Ogden, Head of Fawley Infant School said: “We had a splendid day. The training was professional, entertaining and clear and we all learnt so much.

It was a rare treat for us to go out of school as a whole staff and be trained, something that is normally beyond our means.”
