| Acers and Mrs Lionel's Seat - Exbury Gardens |
It’s the last chance to see the glorious autumn colour at Exbury this week as the world famous Rothschild Gardens close their gates for a short winter break on Sunday evening.
Head gardener John Anderson says there are still many fantastic flowers, trees and fungi that will keep Exbury in the memory over the short dark days of winter.
Top of his list are the flaming Japanese maples, a blaze of colour.
Then comes the beautiful plumy grass, Miscanthus sinensis, blowing gently in the herbaceous border and, throughout the gardens, the amazing variety of fungi, from the red and white fly agaric to the memorable magpie ink caps.
You won’t forget the incredible ‘wiggly tree’, Platanus orientalis, the brilliant ‘sweet gums’, the Liquidamber trees or the incredible ‘history tree’, whose rings show that it is more than 200 years old.

An unforgettable image is created by the view of Exbury’s cascades and autumn colour from the Top Pond while a lot of visitors enjoy the peaceful river walk with long views down the gentle Beaulieu River.
“It might not have been the best of summers,” says John “But the Gardens are still looking great. It gladdens the heart to see all this colour right on winter’s doorstep,” he said.
It’s also the last chance to see the famous Exbury nerine collection in the Five Arrows Gallery. These tender ‘diamond lilies’ with their sparkling petals in a fabulous range of colours remain on show until Sunday.
Entry is free to all who buy a ticket into the Gardens as is the autumn trail, designed to show off the best of the autumn colour.
Visitors who miss their woodland walks during the winter can book tickets for the Santa Special steam rides on the railway on three weekends in December, when entry to the Gardens is free to all who ride on the train.
Exbury is open daily up to and including Sunday November 9th. |
