‘Driving and drugs or drink are a lethal cocktail.’

That’s the hard-hitting message from Hampshire Constabulary this Christmas as the festive party season gets into full swing.

The New Forest Community Safety Partnership supports the winter road safety campaign, which highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.

For the first time this year, the police have a dedicated text message service - 80999 - available to encourage party-goers to report anyone suspected of driving under the influence.

Anybody in need of help or advice on tackling a drugs or alcohol problem, can contact The Bridge support centre in New Milton on 01425 620780.

Alternatively, drug users can talk to Frank, a national helpline – 0800 776600, or online talktofrank.com or by text 82111.

Those with a drink problem can contact Alcoholics Anonymous, tel 0845 769 7555 or visit their website www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk to find details of its recovery programme and local meetings.

Cllr Goff Beck, NFDC portfolio holder for crime and disorder, said: “If you’re out celebrating Christmas and plan to have a drink, make sure you organise a safe journey home.

“The best advice is to leave the car at home or not to drink at all. The consequences of drink or drug-driving are lethal and it’s not worth the risk.”
