A school rugby team on the Waterside has been given the go-ahead to hold matches at home after Fawley Refinery stepped in to help buy essential safety equipment.

Applemore College has bought post protectors, medical kits, water bottles, the services of a qualified referee, and a new kit for the under 16 team, with a £1,000 grant from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley.

The grant was under a special scheme for ExxonMobil employees and their families who serve on school governing bodies.

The scheme not only helps local organisations, but also improves the links between ExxonMobil and the local community.

The grant applicants both employees at Fawley were Allan Pollock, an ExxonMobil Chemical employee and Ian Brown an Esso Petroleum employee.

Ian’s wife, Stephanie Brown, and Allan Pollock are both members of the school’s governing body.

Tom Fleming, head of PE at Applemore College, said:

“We have a situation here at Applemore where loads of pupils are becoming interested in rugby.

The support we have received from ExxonMobil will help us provide better facilities for pupils of all ages who want to take part in competitive fixtures.

There is so much more to rugby than just learning the game. It is an enjoyable way for pupils of all ages to keep fit and develop team skills.”

Allan said:

“I am delighted that ExxonMobil has been able to provide the school with this essential equipment.

As a company we are highly aware of the need to keep safety high on the agenda, so it seems particularly appropriate that the grant has been spent in this way.”

The ExxonMobil scheme for school governors, together with its sister scheme for volunteers, has so far contributed more than £400,000 to local community projects, since it was started six years ago.
