When you recycle your plastic bottles we ask you to remove the tops.
The main reason for asking residents to remove the tops from bottles used to be due to the nylon washer; these are used to seal the top onto the bottle.
The reprocessors find that the nylon washer is difficult to separate from the bottle top and if the washer is not removed it will affect the quality of the recyclables.
This was a large problem some years ago, but this is now a much smaller issue.
However it is still very helpful in the sorting and bailing process if the tops are removed as the bottles should be flat to enable them to be properly sorted at the local sorting plant.
Metal Jar lids and individual bottle tops are too small to be sorted by our reprocessing facilities.
If Metal Jar lids and bottle tops were sent to the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) they would be separated out by the disc screens and sent to the Energy Recovery Facility for burning.
After incineration the metal would be extracted from the bottom ash for recycling.

Top Tips
To overcome the fact that metal jar lids are too small to be separated at the MRF put them into a tin can and squash it.
The lid will be trapped inside and will go off for reprocessing with the can.
