Police in the New Forest are working with the Environment Agency to crack down on fly tipping.
Operation Overflow was launched just before Christmas to disrupt the illegal disposal of waste.
It was devised by the Safer Neighbourhoods team and the Senior Environment officer for enforcement procedures following a survey conducted among New Forest residents.
39 per cent of those questioned said that fly tipping was a significant problem affecting the quality of life in residential areas.
Acting Sergeant Chris Jordan, who led the operation on behalf of the police, said: “The registration numbers of 30 vehicles, believed to be dumping waste illegally were loaded into the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) database fitted to two marked police vehicles, which were parked in problem areas.
“Several of the vehicles were located using the ANPR technology.
Environment Agency officers inspected the documentation of the vehicles stopped and issued directions for the production of waste carriage licenses where applicable. One vehicle was seized and offences relating to the condition of vehicles were dealt with robustly.”
Senior Environment Officer Ian Walton said: “Vehicles carrying controlled waste for profit must register with the Environment Agency.
The licence costs £152 and lasts for three years.
“Unregistered waste carriers are more likely to fly tip their waste.
hey also present unfair competition to legitimate businesses which are licensed.
“Householders and businesses are legally responsible for ensuring their waste is disposed of properly and should be suspicious if someone offers to remove waste cheaply.”
New Forest District Chief Inspector Gary Cooper said: “This type of behaviour has a serious effect on the quality of life for New Forest residents and ruins the natural beauty of the area.
By working with the Environment Agency and other partners we hope to tackle fly tipping issues in the New Forest.”
When using any waste carrier, always check that they are registered with the Environment Agency by calling 08708 506506 or by looking at the public register pages at www.environment-agency.gov.uk
