Hello to this slightly delayed beat update for the beginning of the month, slightly delayed due to leave, however has been overtaken by the tragic event in Fawley last week on 20.10.07 Where an Asian seaman died as a result of a racist attack and another was injured.
Due to the being investigated by the major crime team and persons having been arrested, it wouldn’t be right or proper to comment on the incident as this will be done by the major crime team.
However it can be said that it is being taken very seriously and treated as a critical incident and as such extra resources have been put in place to fully investigate the crime and also to ensure that community issues are addressed.
Updates will be made by the major crime team as and when required to keep the community informed as and when appropriate.
Extra patrols will be in place this weekend and will deal sensitively but robustly with issues as they arise.
In relation to matters which arose in the fortnight to other matters on our beat, there has been a considerable number of beach huts damaged in the Calshot area with unfortunately no witnesses as to the offenders. A line of enquiry is in hand which may result in persons being arrested pending evidence linking them to the crime.
In Holbury there have been two dwelling burglaries where items have been stolen, in these cases there is often positive scenes of crime evidence to assist police and it is often the case that offenders are brought to justice because of this. However it is far better that the crime is averted in the first place and in this sense good crime prevention can help prevent house owners becoming victims of crime.
1) Never open the door or allow strangers into your address or be diverted by them, good burglars often use a distraction technique to draw the occupant away from the house to allow an accomplice to enter and steal. Never leave your front door open and if a person does come to your door unexpectedly (waterboard, gas police council etc) then contact their office using the phone directory and not their ID which may be false.
2) Keep the front of your house open to view from the road this ensures that any person who comes to your house isn’t hidden from view and is less able to work out of sight.
3) Use good lighting so that anyone approaching your path drive at night isn’t shrouded in darkness.
4) Keep a safety chain on the door until you know who is the other side. If you are unhappy with the person the other side then don’t open the door and tell them to go away. If suspicious then call the police to prevent another neighbour becoming a victim of crime.
5) Finally and especially with Christmas coming upon us please record the serial numbers of any expensive products and take a photo so that it can be identified later if it is stolen.
Other than the tragic incident which occurred last week Fawley Parish and the New Forest in general, is a safe community to live in. Hythe police are determined to bring any offenders to justice and assist victims and witnesses fully to ensure that persons can live their normal lives without fear or worry.
Parents can play an active role in this by ensuring that their children are in at a reasonable time depending on their age. If you are allowing your children out then there is a responsibility to ensure they don’t have possession or access to alcohol and that you are aware of their location.
If your child is found committing crime or being a nuisance then positive action will be taken which may well involve them gaining a criminal record which will have an impact on their future lives and careers.
