Hello

This newsletter is a few days late in posting however this is due to some good news regarding the targeting of criminals and solving of crime.

In Holbury there has been a spate of theft from vehicles and burglary to sheds in one evening in the second week in November, 3 youths have been arrested for the majority of these offences and will be going to court for burglary, tampering with vehicles and theft.

There have been no serious incidents of violence in our parish of recent and the assaults recorded are of a minor nature which don’t require medical treatment. New Forest police have a proactive attitude to violence and any persons reported to police will be arrested where evidence exists prosecuted for offences.

The Hythe Safer Neighbourhood team have recently had their duties changed and will be doing permanent lates on Fridays and Saturdays with a remit to target street offending and nuisance behaviour. This has lead to an increase in persons stop checked, alcohol seized from minors and a vehicle seized for nuisance driving.

It is worth noting that there hasn’t been a single burglary to a residential dwelling in the last fortnight and Fawley Parish is a very safe area to live, however in the run up to Christmas and with dark nights now upon us please ensure that you keep windows and doors locked to prevent thief’s using darkness to break into property.

If you have expensive items please record any serial numbers, mark the item with a personal tag (postcode or other unique personal mark) and photo graph your property. This is because police regularly search homes of criminals and if we find property we believe to be stolen we do check it against the stolen property data base, however to return property and convict criminals we need to prove that the item isn’t there’s so please do record essential data unique to the property.

Meeting held at Jubilee Hall, Fawley
Meeting held at Jubilee Hall, Fawley

At a local parish meeting at Jubilee Hall in Fawley over 100 concerned residents turned up to air their views and clearly people are concerned with youths who hang around the streets aimlessly.

As a police officer I know that the vast majority of these youths when spoken to are law abiding and offer no threat to any person and that it is only a small minority who cause the problems.

However we need parents to keep a track of their children at all times and question what they are doing both to protect the child and in order to maintain discipline.

This is not always an easy thing to do as such if a parent feels that they need assistance in relation to this then please contact appropriate agencies such as social services, GP (especially if drug or alcohol issues) educational welfare or the youth offending team who will assess the situation and attempt to offer remedies.

The police take an active part in this and any youth who is found to be at risk has a report put in and their names forwarded to relevant agency or voluntary organisation.

There has been a lot of good positive police work in the last fortnight with offenders being arrested for a high number of crimes, however I need to thanks the public or act by reporting the matter to police and then giving evidence we can take to court, at the end of the day we police with the consent of the local community and without your efforts we will struggle to get offenders to court.

So a big thank you to all persons who have assisted the police of recent especially individuals from the beach hut patrol who have been patrolling in their own time voluntarily and assisted in prosecutions.

It is also vital that property isn’t left on show in vehicles or in gardens especially with persons about to put out their decorations, thieves are mainly opportunists and a few simple measures can drastically reduce the likelihood of being a victim of crime.

  1. Don’t leave valuables on display phones sat nav’s purses and bags in a vehicle are prone to theft especially when left in isolated locations whether this be in the forest, in the street or a shopping car park.
  2. Make sure that the frontage of your property is as open to view as possible, this means that criminals can be seen from the street by passers by and neighbours they will feel more confident when hidden from view by high bushes etc.
  3. Crime prevention measures such as alarms CCTV or signs stating that the property is protected will put doubt in a criminals mind making them feel less safe and comfortable.
  4. Good lighting so that any person who has criminal intent will have a good deterrent effect, at home use lights with sensors to detect persons approaching your door and when parking your car make sure that it is in a good lit location.
  5. Crime prevention advice can be found on the internet and at your local police station so please ask if you need advice prevention is far better than prosecution and may result in a reduction in insurance premiums.

PCSO Bev Hayes is currently looking to set up neighbour hood watch schemes in the parish and if any person wishes to speak to her on the matter she can be contacted at Hythe police station on the number below.

The next parish beat surgery will be at Gangwarily sports centre on 10/12/07 between 7pm and 9pm please feel free to attend and discuss any community issues you have (if you have any crimes to report please contact police directly so that a prompt and effective investigation can be started and don’t leave to the beat surgery).

If any person has intelligence or information to assist police in targeting criminals then please call Hythe Safer neighbourhood team on 0845 045 45 45 or call crime stoppers anonymously all information is treated confidentially.
