Carpets of primroses and a dramatic sweep of daffodils brightening the banks of the wide Beaulieu River are the Easter colours at Exbury.
And visitors will also be able to enjoy the flamboyant flowers of magnolias and camellias throughout the 200 acre woodland garden in the New Forest.
Easter holiday treats lined up for families include special Plant Hunter tours when legendary plant hunter George Forrest comes back to life with hair-raising tales of uprisings, death and glory in China as he quests to bring back new plants and seedlings to England and Exbury.
Children are given free “provisions” to help them survive the rigours of their Explorer Walk, and some seeds to take home and plant.
There are special train trips on the steam railway, when younger children can enjoy a chocolate gift and spot Easter bunnies in the woods from their railway carriages.
There’s also a colouring competition in Mr Eddy’s Restaurant.
In addition to the Easter events, there’ll be special primrose and camellia walks each weekend through the month, leading families to the best of the flowers spreading in swathes through the Gardens.
There’s colour inside too with the Four Seasons Art group’s Spring Exhibition, showing the work of thirteen artists.
Visitors will be able to see the natural world depicted in oils, watercolour, pastels and pencil, as etchings, prints, cards, posters and sculpture.
Outside there’s everything to come. Early rhododendrons are starting into flower, while the Rock Garden promises a blaze of colour, says head gardener John Anderson, who, with his gardening team, has been working to ensure a fantastic year at the award-winning 200-acre woodland gardens in the New Forest.
“There’s plenty to see now but, as we have so much at Exbury, it just means the flowering is better and lasts longer,” he said.
“Easter and the Easter holidays should be fantastic. This is the time of year when Exbury traditionally looks wonderful,” he said. “And with the activities for children and families, there should be a lot of pleasure for everyone.”
