Statement from ExxonMobil Fawley Site

Following the sad demise of the Waterside Sports and Social Club (WSSC) at the end of last year due to financial difficulties, Esso Petroleum Company, Limited, as owner of the Holbury facilities, has been seeking a sustainable way forward that secures the continued use of the sports and changing rooms facilities based there.

We have undertaken a detailed survey of the changing rooms at the Holbury site, and plan to refurbish them.

We are working closely with the newly formed Holbury Community Sports Association (HCSA) which consists of football, cricket, bowls and tennis sections.

Currently, HCSA has a short-term license to use the sports and changing facilities.

However, Esso and HCSA are looking forward to working together for the long-term once all works are completed.

Esso has already commissioned works to bring the utilities (electricity, water, etc.) in the changing room / outside sports facilities up to standard before we commence refurbishment work of the changing rooms themselves.

All work is expected to be completed before April next year and we are working with HCSA to minimise any disruption to their activities and sporting calendar during the refurbishment.

In addition to the refurbishment of the changing room area, there have been, and continue to be, upgrades to the outlying fence line, tree line and entrance/exit areas.

We are grateful to the local community for their patience and understanding while this work is underway.

We are continuing to review options with regards to the main club buildings.

Simon Downing, Fawley Refinery manager, says: “The refurbishment reflects our continued commitment to our local community and keeps the sports facilities at the club available for our community.

We are delighted to support the four sports sections of the Holbury Community Sports Association and look forward to working with them in the future.”

In April this year, Esso agreed a 20-year lease with Ashlett Sailing Club for the sailing facilities at Ashlett Creek.

However, the future use of the Ashlett Mill, which is a Grade II listed building has yet to be determined.

We will communicate further as and when any decision is made concerning the Mill.
