The Mathematics Department at Applemore College was buzzing with excitement last week as they hosted the Junior School Maths Challenge.
The rivalry between the teams of Year 6 students from Waterside Primary School, Blackfield Primary School, Calmore Junior School and Orchard Junior School was fierce, as the budding mathematicians were stretched and challenged.
The teams were given a pack of questions and every five minutes they had to submit an answer.
Applemore College Year 9 students marked their work, and after an hour and 15 minutes the challenge was completed and all the students were rewarded with some Easter chocolate.
Head of Applemore College Maths Department, Mrs B Labram said “The aim of the event was to promote maths and problem solving skills and present them in a fun and exciting way”.
The level of questions was carefully pitched to ensure they were challenging but possible – one student was overheard commenting, whilst passing a question to a team member, “It’s really easy but we can’t do it!”
After a close run competition, Headteacher Mr R Marsh announced the winners – Congratulations to Waterside Primary School.
Applemore College looks forward to organising the next Challenge which will hopefully return to its usual slot in September.
