Students in Year 8 and 9 at Applemore College are being given the opportunity to learn the basics of Mandarin (both spoken and written) and are being introduced to Chinese culture.

Miss Hao, a tutor from the Confucius Institute at Southampton University runs an after school club at Applemore College with 12 – 14 students enjoying the varied activities.

Ben, a Year 9 China Club member, says “The Chinese tutor is really nice and teaches us about aspects of China that we are interested in”, whilst another student, Sam, comments “we are learning lots of language and it gives you an insight into the culture”.

Headteacher, Roland Marsh believes that a greater understanding of Chinese culture and language is becoming more and more important for our young people and he and Head of Foreign Languages, Liz Collison have been working very closely with the Confucius Institute at Southampton University following their visit to Beijing and Chengdu in China.

Applemore students have now become pen pals with pupils at Chengdu Number 20 High School in China and The Confucius Institute have helped to run two cultural days at the College, with students writing Chinese Characters and speaking in Mandarin.

The introduction of a regular after school ‘China Club’ is the first step towards offering Mandarin within the curriculum at Applemore College.

Applemore College would like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year on the 19 February 2015!
