Residents are being invited to learn more about a proposed new cemetery at a former airbase in Calshot.
The site has been assessed by New Forest District Council and its contractor as potentially suitable for use as a cemetery. Should planning permission be granted, the new cemetery would initially provide 2,100 burial spaces over the next 20 years as well as a community open space and wildlife trail.
Residents can find out more about the proposed cemetery, how to give feedback and what it means for the community at cemeteryplanning.co.uk/newforest
The council currently operates seven cemeteries across the district, including Blackfield Cemetery which is nearing capacity with no option to extend the existing cemetery.
Steve Jones, Open Spaces Manager at New Forest District Council, said, “It is important for families to be able to bury loved ones within their local area and that’s why we’ve been working to provide new burial space close to the existing cemetery at Blackfield.
“We would like to involve the local community in the planning process by making the information we have from our site assessments available and gathering their feedback.”
A planning application is due to be submitted in the next few weeks to the New Forest National Park Authority.
