Work starts on new cemetery in Calshot

Work on a new cemetery for the New Forest has started this week recently.

The initial phase will see a gravel car park created on the site, a former RFC base (Royal Flying Corps).

Cllr Alison Hoare (pictured), New Forest District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Regulatory Services, said “Being able to lay to rest loved ones close to home is something that families in the district value highly and, with Blackfield cemetery approaching capacity, I am pleased work is starting on this site to meet the requirements of the local residents”.

Planning permission was granted in December 2016 to create the new cemetery at Calshot on council-owned land to the south-east of St. George’s Hall.

It is anticipated that the new cemetery will provide burial space for approximately 30 years.

The initial work is expected to last approximately six weeks. Work to landscape the area will then start and the cemetery is anticipated to open in spring 2019.

The completion of the Calshot site will mean the current number of seven cemeteries in the New Forest District will be maintained.
