New council cemetery will provide for the district’s burial needs

A new cemetery in Calshot was opened by New Forest District Council on Friday 27 September.

The cemetery has been created on council-owned land that was part of the old RAF Calshot military base, former home to seaplanes and flying boats from before World War 1 until 1961.

The new cemetery is expected to provide burial space for the next 20 years.

Calshot cemetery is one of seven burial sites run by new Forest District Council and will replace Blackfield cemetery which is nearing capacity.

Councillor Alison Hoare, New Forest District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Regulatory Services, said “This new cemetery at Calshot enables us to continue to provide burial space in the New Forest so that families can lay to rest their loved ones close to home.”
